An expert in his field, Richard focuses his camera on a wide range of disciplines, when working with people he seems to relax his subjects, bringing out their unique talents and personality.He has worked with new born babies for Huggies Packaging to Nelson Mandela and Malcolm Turnbull. Richard has been involved in the photographic industry and during his term as president was instrumental in the recent merger of the ACMP and AIPP photographic associations. The AIPP is the peak photographic industry body, now joined with the leading commercial division, the ACMP, together they are committed to developing excellence in imaging and professional photography.


Brief History


Richard’s career began as a passionate hobby at the age of 13. Using a Russian made Zenit 35mm camera he started capturing images in a unique and creative way. Thirty years later his love for image making has evolved into a successful commercial studio based in Sydney Australia.


Richard completed 3 years of full time study at Pretoria Technikon, South Africa, graduating with Distinction and receiving the National Best Student of the Year Award. He completed his thesis on a documentary of Marabastad, South Africa’s First Township exhibiting 150 images and directing a 20 minute documentary film shot on 16mm.


After a 4-year apprenticeship, Richard opened his own studio in Johannesburg, and the following year exhibited a series of Dye Transfer Impressions at Paper Place Gallery. The exhibition was supported by Polaroid and printed using Arches Aquarelle Paper. Richard immigrated to Australia in 1995 and has been working as a commercial photographer to date.

Richard has extensive experience in large format printing and exhibitions, which has given him a huge advantage in producing similar work for clients.


2015

One of Richards latest projects is a coffee table book just printed – Making the Cut – by David Dowsey on the Cutler bespoke tailoring legacy.


2014

HeadOn photography festival was a great opportunity to show Marabastad, a documentary study of Pretoria’s first township, shot in 1988 in South Africa, Richard showcased the original prints and a 16mm documentary.


2012

Richard exhibited a series of Dye Transfer original prints at The Body Exhibition in Waterloo.


2008

Richard launched The Print Room, a working studio gallery, as his passion is to produce the highest quality printing in the most environmental friendly way. He was commissioned by Art Duo to create a series of works for the Melbourne Hyatt Hotel Group, followed by a nature study of trees for Killara Golf.


2005

Easy Digital Poppy Exhibition launched by Turnbull Ossher Design featured large format printing at its best in a multi medium formatt exhibition.


2001

Richard exhibited a series of images using the latest printing technology in partnership with Epson Australia. Judy Saris, Editor of Gourmet Traveler Magazine, opened The Tastebud exhibition at 7 Danks Street, Waterloo. Philip Carr art directed and styled the event. The Gallery and Studio received great publicity and the opening night saw more than 300 people attend. Later that year Richard went on to win the L’otel Best Photographer competition and was asked to exhibit a series of nudes the following year in Darlinghurst.


Richard produced a series of 30 works documenting the glass bottles found in excavating for the Meriton Development in Waterloo. He then went on to produce a series of limited edition prints for The Chiswick Development with a water and sailing theme.


2023


Richard currently works in Advertising Food and Healthcare, Lectures Photography and spend his free time bushwalking and gardening
